Notes by Gallian on Please Please Me album

This album was recorded is a single session in 1963. There are two important things about this album that went against the norms for popular music. Unlike groups that came before the Beatles, they did not use a single lead singer. The album featured both John and Paul taking lead on various tracks and sharing the lead on others. Moreover, both George and Ringo each sing lead on a track. The second break from tradition was that the album featured eight songs written by Lennon and McCartney. At that time the standard practice was to record songs written by people who specialized in writing songs for others to perform. This album has six such songs that had been hits by African American artists. All the songs on the album were part of the Beatles' Cavern Club repertoire. As was the common practice of the day, all the songs are short and about romantic relationships.
